Upon successful completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• describe the key clinical features and phenotypes of PNDs, including Parkinson’s Disease (PD), Motor Neuron Disease (MND), Huntington’s Disease (HD), Friedreich's Ataxia (FA), Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
• explain additional factors in PND impacting assessment and management of communication and swallowing
• evaluate the risks and benefits of impairment-based therapy for dysarthria and dysphonia in PND
• outline specific considerations for communication and swallowing management in the context of life-limiting Illness in PND
• navigate the clinical reasoning around alternative nutrition and eating and drinking with acknowledged risk, within frameworks of clinical guidelines and ethico-legal implications
• implement an AAC solution matching a person's cognitive, linguistic, physical and psychological needs
• discuss the responsibilities, breadth / scope of the SP role in the MDT working with people with PND
• outline issues to consider when educating people with PND and their carers about communication and swallowing
• explain the multi-dimensional therapeutic framework that guides SP interventions with PND
• apply theory and evidence to daily clinical assessment and management
• develop a tool kit of resources to use in clinical practice.

Registrants must be speech pathologists.

Whilst students who have undertaken lectures/coursework/clinical placements in the above are welcome to attend, preference will be given to qualified SPs. This workshop is relevant for clinicians with some knowledge or experience working with adults with acquired communication and swallowing impairments in the acute, sub-acute or community setting.

Registrants need to be familiar with neurogenic dysphagia and dysarthria and cognitive communication deficits. Basic knowledge of assistive / alternative communication aids is desirable.

If you have attended the previous workshop in 2018, please be advised some similar content about key features of various PNDs will be covered in a more succinct manner. However, a major focus of this workshop will be on practical diagnostic and management strategies, with multiple case study vignettes in interactive learning format. The evidence base for treatment will be explored in greater detail and clinical reasoning around decision-making for eating and drinking with acknowledged risk will be covered.

Dr Anna Farrell

 Dr Anna Farrell is the Director of Speech Pathology at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Metro South Health. Anna has extensive clinical experience in adult neurological disorders in Australia and the United Kingdom. Anna completed doctoral research evaluating the impact of neurosurgical treatments on motor speech function in Parkinson’s disease at The University of Queensland.

Dr Shana Taubert

Dr Shana Taubert is a speech pathologist at The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where her clinical caseload is predominantly Neurology inpatient and outpatients, the majority of whom have progressive neurological disorders. Shana completed her PhD at the University of Queensland, investigating Enhancement of speech pathology provision of videofluoroscopic swallow studies.
