6 Connections 2017
AusDoCC is the key support group for Australian and New Zealand families and individuals affected by a disorder of the corpus callosum. A disorder of the corpus callosum (DCC) occurs when all or part of the corpus callosum fails to form. The corpus callosum is the largest connecting structure between the two hemispheres of the brain. It can cause a range of associated disorders such as autism, cerebral palsy, developmental delay, epilepsy and speech disorders. Many of the children are non verbal. The families are historically isolated, unsupported and frustrated. We are bringing together the world's leading scientists with health and education practitioners with families from Australia and New Zealand. We welcome the attendance of your members at a cutting edge opportunity to hear the best in the world, so that families affected by a DCC can be supported with effective management strategies. It is a disorder that affects 1:4000 live births. Preceding our conference the world's leading DCC brains will gather in Melbourne for a one day symposium, Cortical Connections 2017, which your members may also like to attend. More details can be found on the website.

17 AGOSCI Conference 2017 (Melbourne) Pre-conference 1/2 day workshop: ‘I want to have my cake and eat it too’ - a collaborative framework for mealtime decision-making
Presented by Cath Willmot, Fion Tang and Laura McElhinney
People with disability should be at the centre of all their life decisions. However balancing duty of care and dignity of risk can be a difficult space for people with disability and speech pathologists to navigate together. This can be a particular issue at mealtimes when preference and choice can impact on an individual’s health and well-being. This workshop will assist speech pathologists to develop skills to support people with disability when their mealtime preferences and decisions do not match clinical recommendations.
Ready – gathering the information from key stakeholders.
Set – sharing the decision making process to develop a mealtime plan
AACtion – using the mealtime plan when out and about.
Case studies and the lived experience of people with disability will be used to highlight the shared decision making process developed and used at Yooralla.
