Oral Language and Literacy in Education Conference

The Oral Language and Literacy in Education Conference will showcase ideas and programs that function in all sections of the Education System. Professor Pamela Snow will lead the day with a thought provoking and challenging address which will set the tone for the rest of the day.

The day will continue with the following presentations:

‘Let’s Chat Program’ (Early Learning approach) – this approach supports educators, parents and playgroup facilitators to increase their ability to turn shared book reading and everyday routines into opportunities to build early literacy skills.

Primary School approach – Pamela Thuan, Speech Pathologist and Specialist Language Consultant. This presentation will provide participants with concrete examples from two different primary schools where the whole school approach has been used for over 10 years. It will include advice on data analysis, the diversity of a Speech Pathologist’s role in the education sector and how to adapt to meet the needs of individual schools.

Secondary School approach – Dr Charlotte Forwood, Speech Pathologist and Teacher. This session explores the challenges and opportunities with a whole school approach to speech pathology services in the secondary context. It considers what Response to Intervention can look like in the secondary setting and provides examples of different levels of intervention and collaboration. It highlights the complementary roles of the speech pathologist and teacher, with a focus on the specific skills a speech pathologist brings to the school. The benefits of a whole school approach are discussed as well as general considerations.
