RESTART (the Rotterdam Evaluation study of Stuttering Therapy in preschool children - A Randomised Trial) is the name of a research trial that was conducted in the Netherlands. RESTART compared two treatments for early stuttering - the Lidcombe Program and Demands and Capacity Model (DCM) treatment. Both programs had comparable outcomes at 18 months post randomisation (De Sonneville-Koedoot et al, 2015). Therefore, parents of a pre-school, stuttering children can be offered a choice between these two different treatments, supported by randomised trial evidence. An optimal fit between parents’  values and ideas and the treatment may result in better adherence to treatment and a better outcome.

The aim of this refresher is to review the demands and capacities model and the evidence supporting it, the assessment and therapy procedure. Discussion of a case study and further practicing skills in applying RESTART-DCM, depending on the specific need of the participants.

This refresher course is only for speech pathologists who have already completed the 30 hour training program. Registrants will be given access to a short pre-recording prior to each live session. The pre-recording will provide an update of the evidence supporting application of RESTART-DCM therapy.

    Learning objectives

At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to

    • recall the evidence base of RESTART-DCM treatment for preschool children who stutter
    • conduct a RESTART-DCM specific assessment and to map the relevant demands and capacities for a specific child according to the four domains
    • explain the model to parents
    • implement Phase 1 reducing demands from the environment
    • implement Phase 2 by increasing the child's capacities
    • engage in speech play with a child so they experience that speaking and stuttering can be effortful and more fluent
    • apply the approach to daily practice, including problem solving, primarily driven by (submitted) bases participants have commenced work on

    Who should attend
