This workshop provides an overview of metacognitive strategy instruction (MSI) and explores the utility of MSI when working with adults with neurological communication disorders. Case based learning will support the exploration of how MSI may be applied to support clients with a range of neurological conditions impacting self-awareness, fatigue and ability to return to work or study.

Participation in this workshop entails completing a pre workshop activity, followed by 2 X 2.5 hour online workshops.


Learning objectives

Upon successful completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Describe metacognition and metacognitive intervention strategies.
  • Identify opportunities to utilise metacognitive strategy instruction across a range of adult neurological communication disorders.
  • Apply metacognitive strategy instruction to planning treatment across case-based scenarios.
  • Evaluate generalisation of metacognitive strategy interventions to participation in valued roles and activities.

Who should attend

Registrants must be speech pathologists.

Speech Pathology students who have undertaken relevant lectures/ coursework/clinical placements are welcome to attend.

Foundation knowledge of cognitive communication disorders is required.

Presenters

Dr Ronelle Hewetson

Ronelle Hewetson is a lecturer in the Master of Speech Pathology program at Griffith University. Her areas of teaching include cognitive-communication disorders post right hemisphere stroke and TBI, progressive neurological conditions, motor speech disorders, paediatric voice, hearing, and palliative care. Prior to commencing at Griffith University, she worked clinically for 10 years in Australia and South Africa, predominantly in hospital based acute and rehabilitation units and community-based rehabilitation services for adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders.

Ronelle is a founding member of the International Right Hemisphere Collaborative and a member of the Academy of Neurological Communication Disorders writing group on right hemisphere brain damage that focus on supporting speech pathology practice related to cognitive communication disorders. Her research areas include acquired communication disorders (right hemisphere stroke, TBI), student-supported service delivery in voice and aged care, and the use of technology to support assessment (e.g. development of the Pocket MEC screening tool) and education provision (e.g. the development of the righthemispherestroke.org website). On a personal level, Ronelle lives in Brisbane where she enjoys trail running, gardening and spoiling her two Main Coon cats.

A/Professor Petrea Cornwell

Petrea Cornwell is the Rural Interprofessional Educator for Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service and holds the academic title of Associate Professor (Speech Pathology) with Griffith University. Petrea is passionate about speech pathology practice in neurological populations, building clinical and research capacity in practising clinicians, rural and remote practice, and innovative models of rehabilitation. Prior to commencing her current role, Petrea had worked in multiple academic roles with teaching and research interests in cognitive-communication disorders, dysphagia, brain impairment, and person-centred rehabilitation.

Along with Ronelle and colleagues from North America, Petrea is a founding member of the International Right Hemisphere Collaborative and a member of the Academy of Neurological Communication Disorders writing group on right hemisphere brain damage. On a personal note, Petrea has recently relocated from south-east Queensland to tropical far north Queensland living on the Atherton tablelands enjoying all that is offered by a rural lifestyle.
