Listening to children with DLD: What can we learn?

Communication is fundamental to social connectedness, emotional wellbeing, academic success, and vocational outcomes. Children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) are known to have challenges communicating, highlighting the important role speech pathologists have in supporting this population. An in-depth understanding of how these communication challenges may impact children’s everyday functioning is needed to ensure these supports are individualised and client centered.

In this seminar, we first focus on personal narrative skills, the ability to relate past personally experienced events, which make up more than half of children’s daily conversations. We present an overview of the Global TALES protocol for eliciting personal narratives, before presenting findings into the personal narrative performance of 50 ten-year-old children with DLD and their age-matched peers without DLD. We finish by providing an overview of high school students’ per-spectives on school-based tasks, educational supports, and school connectedness.
