New wording in the MBS

Following advocacy from Speech Pathology Australia in 2023, there has been an update to the wording within the new Health Insurance (Professional Services Review - Allied Health and Others) Determination 2023 that came into effect on 1 March 2024. This new wording reflects that a speech pathologist must be a 'Certified Practising Speech Pathologist' to obtain a Medicare provider number and claim for items under Medicare. This will give stakeholders and service users greater clarity that they are seeing a speech pathologist who is maintaining recency of practice, undertaking professional development, including with regard to cultural responsiveness and has fulfilled the requirements for CPSP status, rather than reflecting SPA membership status. Full or Provisional Certified Practising members and Non-Member Certified Practitioners can use the CPSP title.
